Georges Niang discusses the growth of young Sixers big man Paul Reed – Sixers Wire

CAMDEN, N.J.–The journey of Philadelphia 76ers big man Paul Reed has been a wild one. He was a second-round pick in the 2020 draft and he has been up and down from the G League to the NBA, he’s been in the rotation, out of the rotation, in the dog house, and now he is the backup to Joel Embiid.
Reed, the 2021 G League MVP winner, has had an up and down second season in the NBA as he has been in the dog house of coach Doc Rivers. He was out of position at times on the floor and it has taken a while for him to earn the trust of Rivers and his teammates at this point.
However, he has been able to do so and he is now the backup to Embiid in the playoffs.
“His growth has been great,” said Georges Niang. “Success, I think it’s like a meme where it’s like success isn’t just this. It’s falling down and getting up and so I mean, that’s Paul Reed’s journey and I tried to talk to him along the way with him going down to the G League and just staying consistent.”
The biggest thing with Reed has been his work ethic. He has been able to stay consistent and work hard every day despite at times not even being considered for playing time.
“The one thing with him is that he’s done a remarkable job of just showing up and working hard every day,” Niang added. “I’m a firm believer, if you do that, you can beat out 80% of your competition just by showing up and working hard every day. He’s done that and a credit to him. It’s shown and he was great for us Game 1, and I look forward to him growing and continuing to grow with us in this playoff journey.”
Reed was working hard after shootaround on Monday morning before the team’s Game 2 matchup with the Toronto Raptors and Niang said that is normal.
“That’s normal to see Paul Reed breaking a sweat before practice,” Niang finished. “Then after, the last one in here. He’s a gym rat and the basketball gods reward guys like that.”

The Sixers will likely turn to Reed throughout this series and they will look to help him figure it out going forward.
